Anchalika Kijkanakorn

Company: Small Luxury Hotels of the World

Job title: Board of Directors

Anchalika Kijkanakorn is the Managing Director and Founder of AKARYN Hotel Group (AHG), Thailand’s award-winning owner and operator of boutique luxury hotels and resorts. She is also recent chairperson of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) – a post to which she was elected for three consecutive years – the first Asian and the first woman to lead the organisation. She still sits on the Board of Directors of SLH, where she has played a key role for more than 12 years.

Before entering the hospitality industry, Anchalika spent 10 years with GE Capital and held various senior roles in the financial sector, managing teams across Asia, Europe and the United States. Switching her focus to hotels in 2003, Anchalika pioneered barefoot luxury hospitality experiences in Thailand with AHG’s exclusive all-villa and loft-style beachfront resorts, Aleenta Hua Hin-Pranburi and Aleenta Phuket-Phang Nga. She later launched the akyra brand with art-inspired all-suite concept, akyra Manor Chiang Mai, in the northern Thai city’s hip and artistic Nimmanhaemin district.

Guided by Anchalika’s vision, AHG developed its own Ayurah wellness brand, an integrated approach to medical and holistic health, as well as the Italics restaurant brand, a standalone Italian-inspired dining experience with outlets in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, both of which won Thailand Tatler Top Table Awards. The Italics restaurant at akyra Manor Chiang Mai consistently ranks on TripAdvisor as one of the Top 3 Tables in the area.

In 2016, AHG launched akyra Thonglor Bangkok, an all-suite luxury boutique hotel in the heart of the capital’s most fashionable neighbourhood.  A year later, it opened its epicurean beach club concept, the akyra Beach Club Phuket, where sun meets style, cool tunes, good vibes and great people.

Most recently, akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok opened in June 2018, becoming the first new hotel in Asia to launch without any single-use plastics in its rooms or F&B outlets. The 50-suite chic boutique luxury hotel features the warm and welcoming Siam Soul Café and a cool, urban rooftop pool bar and grill, RISE. The hotel was featured on BBC News, The Times and in Forbes magazine for its pioneering approach to limited plastic usage, as well as being one of Bangkok’s most noteworthy new hotel openings in 2018.

Looking ahead, AHG has revealed an ambitious strategy to continue to expand its collection of akyra hotels and resorts from four to twelve by 2022, with new locations in destinations all across Southeast Asia. These will include akyra Rattanakosin Bangkok (2020) and akyra Fingerlakes Hoi An (2022). The company will also unveil further expansion in Chiang Mai in 2021.

In 2006, Anchalika launched the Pure Blue Foundation, which focuses on the protection of marine environments and also supports local community work with school children, two causes close to her heart. Her work with Pure Blue has gained considerable praise globally, highlighted by her inclusion in Forbes Asia’s list of the leading 40 philanthropists in 2015.

She has two young sons and is based in Bangkok.
